APM Heysen pressed metalYES you can paint pressed metal/pressed tin. For the best results it should be undercoated with a suitable primer such as metal etch available from any good hardware store then painted any colour desired using water or oil based enamel in the chosen finish such as gloss, matt or satin. Gloss finish will enhance the design of the pressed metal while satin and matt will give a more subtle finish. For a hygienic and seamless look any overlaps should be sealed with silicon or similar product after undercoating with etch primer. For the best finish 2 to 3 coats of paint in your chosen colour and finish should be applied. Splashbacks, walls and ceilings can be painted using brushes, rollers or sprayed depending on the pattern and the type of project.

A common question asked is “Can you Powdercoat Pressed Metal?” Yes pressed metal can be powder coated however for splashbacks we strongly recommend painting. The positives of painting are that all joins/overlaps can be gapped after etch primer and before painting to give a hygienic seamless finish. Other benefits of painting are that you can colour match to your walls and cupboards etc and choose the finish you prefer such as gloss, matt or satin. Painting your splashback also makes it easy to change the colour of your splashback if you decide to change your mind. Powder coating or Colourbond is recommended for exterior use such as verandahs and awnings or feature walls however a quality exterior paint is also highly recommended if you want to DIY. Australian Pressed Metal also offers a professional painting service to complete your project.
