Project DescriptionAdelaide Pressed Metal were contracted to carry out works on the Heritage Listed Sands & McDougall Building to repair & restore the original pressed metal verandah ceiling & metal cantilever verandah awning to original condition. Originally 19th century classical style architecture, the facade of the building was remodeled in 1933 to the Art Deco Style in fashion at the time. The original cantilever awning was removed to an offsite location so that repairs to the building facade could be underpinned & restored. The awning was cut in half, taken down & transported to a warehouse where Adelaide Pressed Metal dismantled & repaired the framing of the verandah. The pressed metal was dipped in baths to remove the paint & as much original pressed metal was salvaged as possible. The timber framework was replaced & ceilings battened in preparation for the reinstallation of the pressed metal. Approximately 60% of the original pressed metal material was able to be salvaged with new pressed metal, Lindfield Large design 600mm x 600mm & Fine Roughcast design as the border pattern matching seamlessly with the old original pressed metal. The original pressed metal vents (4 of ) were stripped, restored, soldered together & reinstalled. Due to the closeness of the building to the road the metal awning facades' Art deco features had taken some heavy vehicle damage over the years especially on the corner of the awning. Adelaide Pressed Metal refolded and restored the original metal awning facade to the original Art Deco detail.
