Beaufort Hall & Beaufort Heritage Staircase Restoration Perth 2018-2019

  • Scope of Contracting Works
Produce 2 new pressed metal dies to imperial measurements from original samples. Restore and replace damaged, rusted panels to the original pressed metal ceilings & staircase. Builder - Multiplex Northbridge Perth Western Australia
  • Project Description
National Pressed Metal (the contracting arm of Australian Pressed Metal) & Perth Pressed Metal worked closely with Heritage Architects & builder Multiplex on the restoration & redevelopment of the heritage listed buildings in the Perth Cultural Centre, part of a state heritage precinct with buildings dating back to the 1890's Gold Rush. Restoration of Beaufort Halls' heritage ceiling was required with some of the original panels removed in order to upgrade services and comply to code and then reinstated where possible. New die manufacture was required from a sample of the original pressed metal panel as the design was no longer in existence. A sample panel was used to reproduce the design to the exact imperial measurements and the new design Star Chain was produced. Work included removal of damaged and rusted panels and replacement with the newly produced panels to marry up exactly and seamlessly to the original existing panels restoring this ceiling to its original charm. The impressive staircase had fallen into disrepair over many years of neglect & a specialist team was needed to restore it to its former glory.  The pressed metal on the original existing Beaufort staircase had been taken down in the early 1960's & replaced with fibrous panels which required restoration of the entire staircase. Architects drawings were in metric measurements & after consultation with heritage advisors and the heritage architect it was decided that imperial measurements were preferred for the restoration of the staircase & production of the pressed metal panels to keep the original authentic heritage fabric. A new die for the panels was produced like for like from just a photograph (not from an original sample as is usual) to the exact measurements of the original pressed metal panels which was named Beaufort in honor of the staircase. The teams from National Pressed Metal and Perth Pressed Metal produced and installed the reproduced panels to the staircase restoring it to its former grandeur.
